Up coming soon: Soy Candle Making At Home For Profit

Candlemaking has been around since the beginning of time. There are numerous methods and materials used in candles, depending on which candle you might desire to choose.

In this lesson we will focus on the making of SOY candles.

The candle industry has enjoyed growth year after year. In fact, it is a multi-billion dollar a year industry. On average, the making and selling of soy candles nets a  200% to 400% profit!. When starting to look at a business to launch, there are a couple of ways to look for a ideal business.
1. Find an untouched market. New idea, ground floor if you will or.
2. Improve upon an already great product or service.
No, not reinvent the wheel, simply improve upon the idea.
This brings us to the meat and potatoes of the soy candle home business. We are not reinventing the candle, we are simply improving upon the concept.

Most people, given a choice, would prefer a soy candle over a parrifin candle. Why?, why would one want to subject themselves to potential toxins. WOW!, now there is the selling point. The soy candle industry has seen an explosive increase in growth in the last couple of years.

There are other non-toxic waxes available, but for us, the soy candle was less expensive and much easier to make. But whatever candle product you choose to make, this lesson will give you an overall idea in how to get started.

Items that you will need

Items that you will need are:Double boiler, therometer, five pound scales, Soy wax, jars,(Your jars must be candle jars)wicks,(wicks are sized to the size of the container you will be using for your candle) wick tabs(these are tabs that hold the wick to the bottom of your container).color chips or dye, fragrance oil,and popcicle sticks.(the sticks will help you to keep your wick in the center of the container). Also you will need preprinted caution labels to place on the bottom side of your jar. This is a must for resell!

STEP1

Make sure to have a clean place to work , your kitchen counter works well for this. We start by washing and drying our jars that we will use for our candles.

STEP2

Measure your jar at the largest diameter and choose the appropiate wick size.(Your candle supplier will best be able to help you with this during your order process) Apply the wick tab to your wick, and place the wick into the center of the jar. Now is a good time to place the caution label on the bottom side of your jar. Your jar is now ready.

STEP3

Now take your pour pitcher from your double boiler and place on your kitchen scales, and then zero the scale. (This is setting the tare weight, we want the actual weight of soy wax minus the pitcher weight.) If you want to pour a 4oz candle then use 4oz of soy wax, and so forth. If you do not know the ounce of your jar, simply fill with water, then pour into a measuring cup to determine the ounces. This is better done during the washing of the jars. Weigh the amount of soy wax you want to pour and add your color chip or chips. If you are using dye then you can add the dye later in the melt process. Place the pour pitcher into your already heating double boiler.

STEP4

Heat the soy wax to 150 degrees or less, monitoring with your thermometer,WARNING do not exceed 170 degrees  Stir the wax often during this process. Once the wax has melted, you can add your dye if you are not using color chips, Now remove from the heat for the cooling process.

STEP5

Measure out the fragrance per the ounce of wax you have melted. We use 1ounce of fragrance per 1 pound of wax. Your supplier also can help you out with this depending on the fragrance you choose. Around 100 degrees wax pour the fragrance in and stir the wax. The fragrance will bring the wax temperture down quickly. You will probably want to pour your candle at 90 degrees or so. It should have the presence of cream of wheat. Pouring to warm can cause too much shrinkage, and a bad top.

STEP6

After pouring your wax into your jar or jars, slide a popsicle stick down over the wick to hold the wick in place.(Of course, the stick must have a hole through the center). Some makers place the stick over the wick before pouring. Let the candles cure and then trim the wick to 1/4" from top of wax.

Now your in business!
